Bangladesh is a relatively new nation with a long history going back to
ancient times. It has been predominantly a Muslim country since the Muslims
arrived in the 12th century. The British later seized control of
South Asia. When India gained its independence from England in 1947, a
West Pakistan and an East Pakistan were created to give these Muslim areas
their own government and representation. However, many differences and
disputes arose between West and East Pakistan and a civil war broke out
leaving one million dead and 10 million fleeing to India. In 1971 East
Pakistan became Bangladesh as it declared its independence from West
Pakistan.
Bangladesh's President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in 1981 in a failed
coup. His vice president replaced him but he was ousted in a coup in 1982 by
General H.M. Ershad.
Many conflicts between Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan still occur.
Bangladesh is struggling with an impoverished economy. Their main exports,
crop and jute, are traded for manufactured goods from other nations.
Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest nations and is often hit first by
horrible droughts then deadly rainstorms because of its geographical position
and the unpredictability of the summer monsoons.
